UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS

Admission Requirements

Entry into the programme is by merit as specified from time to time by the University and approved by the National Universities Commission. The B. Fisheries degree is a 3 to 5 years programme, depending on level of entry as determined by the candidates’ qualification.

For 5 years, B. Fish, SSC/WASC/GCE ‘0’ Level SSCE credit passes in Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, Mathematics, English Language and any other Science subject.  At least a Pass in Physics is required.  A credit in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology.  Also a pass 7 in English Language is acceptable if high grades are scored in the Science subjects.

Direct Entry:  Candidates who have met the above requirement plus HSC/GCE ‘A’ level passes in Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science are eligible for direct entry admission.  OND/NCE with adequate O/L qualifications can be admitted to Year II and will run through the 5-year programme.

HND:  HND holders may be admitted to year III and will be required to undertake the entire programme including the one-year practical training.

Any other equivalent qualification may be considered for entry into the programs on its own individual merit.

1.2.2     POSTGRADUATE

Admission Requirements

PGD Programme

  • Applicants should be holders of minimum of third class honours degree of UAM or other recognised Universities.
  • Holders of the Higher National Diploma (HND) at the upper credit or distinction level in Agriculture, Food Science and Technology or Fisheries from any recognised institutions with minimum of lower credit.

Masters’ Degree Programme

  • Graduates of University of Agriculture Makurdi or any other recognized Universities who have obtained a Bachelor degree with at least second class honours in Fisheries or Zoology or biology and related agricultural degrees.
  • Candidates that possess postgraduate Diploma in Fisheries with CGPA of not less than 3.50.
  • Candidates who are not Fisheries graduates when admitted may be required to audit or take some courses that could broaden their base.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Degree Programmes

Graduates of UAM or other recognised Universities who have obtained Masters’ degree in relevant disciplines with CGPA of not less than 3.50.

GRADUATION POLICY

Requirements for Graduation (undergraduate)

(i)             Students must have paid all prescribed fees and must be duly matriculated;

(ii)         Students must have passed the prescribed General Studies courses; by this provision, direct entry students shall also be required to take general studies courses;

(iii)        Students must have passed all core courses in the degree programme for which he/she was registered;

(iv)        Student must have accumulated the required minimum number of credits as determined by the college and approved by senate for the award of degree;

(v)         Student must have been of good conduct throughout his/her stay in the University, and

(vi)       meet the minimum residential requirement of 3 years.

The minimum Cumulative Credits Earned (CCE) required for graduation for undergraduate programme are as follows:
The minimum CCE for those entering at 100 Level is 203
The minimum CCE for those entering at 200 Level is 159
The minimum CCE for those entering at 300 Level is 112

Repeats in final examinations

Final year students who fail one or two courses are permitted to register and sit for only the failed courses. All other category of students must meet the minimum credit load requirement of 15 credit units.
